Chapter 9 - The Trap Sprung and the Brilliant Counter-Strategy Orchestrated by Donna Moretti

The digital clock on the cabin wall read 2:14 A.M. Outside, the wind howled through the pine trees, bringing the first heavy flurries of an Adirondack snowstorm.

"If Vince and Paulie have flipped," I said, my voice cold and lethal, "they sign their own death warrants. But right now, we need to neutralize them before they trap my men at the docks."

I pulled out my satellite phone, ready to bark orders to Marcus. But Isabella reached out and gently placed her hand over the keypad, stopping me.

"If you call Marcus now on an unsecured frequency, Vince and Paulie will intercept the transmission," Isabella said. "They monitor your private comms channels, Dante. I told you—you've grown sloppy."

I looked down at her hand on mine. The skin was warm, firm, and completely steady. For eleven years, this woman had been my anchor, and I had nearly thrown her away for a shallow reflection.

"Then what do we do?" I asked, dropping my alpha-male posturing entirely. "You've mapped out their movements. You tell me how we win this."

A fierce, brilliant light danced in Isabella's dark eyes. For the first time, I saw the true Donna Moretti—not the quiet housewife who poured coffee, but the fierce queen who ruled the East Coast underworld alongside me from the shadows.

"We don't go to the docks to fight," Isabella said quietly. "We use their own greed against them. Vince and Paulie think they're betraying a blind king. We let them think they've won until the very last second."

She walked over to her desk, picking up a secure encrypted laptop—the one connected to the global offshore accounts.

"While you were driving up here," Isabella said, her fingers flying across the keyboard with astonishing speed, "I rerouted thirty million dollars in unttraceable syndicate funds from Vince and Paulie's private Swiss accounts into an empty shell company controlled directly by Salvatore Gambino."

I blinked, watching her. "You framed Salvatore for stealing from his own new recruits?"

"I didn't frame him," Isabella smiled coldly. "I simply made it look like Salvatore demanded their tribute early. When Vince and Paulie realize their millions have vanished into Salvatore's pocket right before the raid, do you think they're going to fight for the Gambinos?"

The sheer brilliance of her plan hit me like lightning. Greed and paranoia were the twin gods of the underworld. By making Vince and Paulie believe their new boss had already double-crossed them, their alliance with the Gambinos would shatter instantly from the inside out.

"Isabella," I whispered, awe washing over me. "You are terrifying."

"I am simply surviving, Dante," she replied without missing a beat. "Now... let's go take back our empire."
