Chapter 7 - The Ledger of Secrets and the Threat That Keeps the FBI and Rival Syndicates at Bay

The fire crackled softly in the stone hearth, casting dancing orange shadows across the wooden walls of the cabin. For hours, Isabella and I talked—really talked—for the first time in years. There were no interrupted phone calls from capos, no business meetings waiting in smoke-filled back rooms, and no mistress demanding shallow luxuries. There was only the quiet echo of our past colliding with the bitter reality of our present.
"The document you left on your laptop," I said quietly, breaking the silence. "The financial ledger. Marcus says it has enough leverage to bring down half the city council and half of our syndicates."
Isabella took a slow sip of her coffee. "It does. It contains every shell company, every bribe, and every illegal offshore account you’ve accumulated over the past twelve years. And it's backed up on three independent servers outside the country, set with a dead-man's switch."
I looked up at her, feeling a cold shiver run down my spine. "You programmed a dead-man's switch? Isabella, if federal agents or rival families find out you have that information, you'll be hunted by every killer on the East Coast. Including my own men if they think you're a threat."
"Let them try," she replied, her voice entirely calm, lacking any trace of tremor. "Dante, do you think I survived eleven years married to the most feared mafia boss in America by being naive? I didn't build that switch to destroy you out of spite. I built it to protect myself. The moment you took Valentina into that secret penthouse, you stopped being my protector. I had to become my own."
I swallowed hard, realizing the terrifying depth of my wife's tactical genius. While I was playing the big-shot mob boss, buying expensive necklaces and treating my marriage like an inconvenience, Isabella had quietly armed herself with the ultimate deterrent. She wasn't just a runaway housewife; she was an independent strategist holding the entire Moretti syndicate by the throat.
"I don't want to fight you, Isabella," I said, my voice dropping to a rough whisper. "I want you to come home."
"Home?" She let out a dry, humourless laugh. "Dante, that mansion in New York isn't a home. It's a gilded cage where you kept me hidden while you lived a double life. Until you understand what it means to actually partner with someone—rather than rule over them—this cabin is my home."
Before I could answer, my encrypted satellite phone buzzed in my jacket pocket. I pulled it out, frowning. It was Marcus.
I pressed answer. "Boss," Marcus's voice came through, frantic and breathless. "We have a major problem. The Gambino family caught wind that you left the city to chase Mrs. Moretti. They think the Moretti family is vulnerable. They're mobilizing fifty men toward our northern docks, and Salvatore just put a hit out on your position!"
My blood ran cold. The underworld smelled weakness, and my temporary absence had invited sharks to the water.
