Chapter 8 - The Shadow War at the Northern Docks and Why My Wife is the Only One Who Can Save My Empire

The phone call ended with a sharp click. I stood up so fast my armchair scraped loudly against the wooden floorboards.

"What is it?" Isabella asked, her eyes narrowing as she read the tension in my posture.

"Salvatore Gambino," I snarled, my mafia boss persona instantly flooding back into my veins. "He heard I was out of the city. He’s mobilizing fifty men to hit our primary shipping docks in upstate New York. They think the Moretti throne is empty."

Isabella stood up slowly, setting her coffee mug down on the counter. "Salvatore has always been impatient. He thinks your empire is built entirely on muscle and fear."

"It's built on strategy, and right now, my core leadership is split," I said, pulling out my secondary satellite phone to coordinate emergency defense protocols with Marcus. "I have to get back to the docks immediately. If the Gambinos take our northern shipping routes, our alliances will collapse within forty-eight hours."

I looked at Isabella, hesitation gripping my chest. I couldn't leave her here unprotected if Salvatore's men knew roughly where I had traveled, but I also couldn't force her to come with me into a warzone.

"Isabella, pack a bag," I ordered quickly, my tone turning commanding. "You're coming with me to a secure safehouse. I won't leave you exposed while a war starts in the backyard."

Isabella didn't move. She crossed her arms and stared at me like I had lost my mind.

"Dante," she said, her voice cutting through my panic like a scalpel. "Listen to me very carefully. You think you're going back to save your empire, but you're walking straight into a trap."

I froze. "What are you talking about?"

"Salvatore Gambino isn't just launching a random raid," Isabella explained, stepping closer. "For the past six months, while you were busy with Valentina, I monitored the financial transfers across the allied families. Salvatore didn't just wake up today and decide to attack. He’s been quietly buying out two of your regional capos. The men guarding the northern docks aren't just facing an outside attack—they're facing internal betrayal."

My breath caught in my throat. "Internal betrayal? Which capos?"

"Marcus hasn't told you yet because he just found out an hour ago," Isabella said calmly. "Vince and Paulie. They've been funneling cargo manifests to the Gambinos."

I stared at my wife in stunned disbelief. For months, I had been completely blind, blinded by arrogance and an affair, while my own inner circle rotted from the inside out. And the only person who saw it, who tracked it, who understood the intricate chess game of the underworld was the woman standing in front of me in an oversized flannel shirt.

"If you go back there guns blazing like you always do," Isabella continued, "Salvatore’s men will surround the docks, Vince and Paulie will lock down the perimeter, and you'll walk right into an execution."
