Chapter 4 - The Secret Alliance and the First Clue That Leads Across State Lines

The sun dipped below the New York skyline, casting long, bloody shadows across the pavement. I returned to my fortress of a mansion, but the emptiness inside the grand halls was suffocating. Every room held a ghost. The kitchen where Isabella used to brew black coffee for me every morning; the library where she read classic literature while I reviewed shipments; the grand staircase where she stood in her emerald gown on our tenth anniversary.

Marcus was waiting in my study, looking grim. He held a manila folder in his hands.

"Boss," Marcus said as I walked in, pouring myself a glass of neat bourbon. "We tracked the burner phone signal associated with the vehicle Isabella abandoned."

I stopped mid-sip, my eyes locking onto him. "Where?"

"Upstate. Near Lake Placid," Marcus replied, laying photographs across my desk. "A small mountain cabin registered under an LLC that hasn't been active in twelve years. But here’s the kicker, Dante—the LLC was purchased by a silent investor using offshore funds managed by a firm in Zurich. The same firm Isabella’s uncle used before he passed away."

I stared at the photographs. A secluded wooden cabin surrounded by thick pine trees, nestled deep in the Adirondacks. It was isolated, quiet, and completely off the radar of the Moretti organization.

"Get the private jet ready," I ordered immediately. "We fly out in one hour."

"Dante, wait," Marcus cautioned, stepping forward. "If she didn't want to be found, and she set up a dead-man’s switch on your financial files, walking up to her cabin like a typical mob boss might force her to pull the trigger. You can't just storm in there with guns blazing."

"I'm not going there to threaten her, Marcus," I said quietly, feeling a profound exhaustion settle into my bones. "I'm going there to bring my wife home."

Two hours later, our private jet cut through the stormy night sky toward upstate New York. During the flight, I reviewed every memory of Isabella. I remembered how she used to laugh when I tried to cook dinner and failed miserably. I remembered how she held me the night my younger brother died. For eleven years, I had taken her absolute loyalty for granted, assuming that because she wore my ring, she was a permanent fixture of my landscape—a piece of furniture I could ignore while I chased power and external validation.

When the jet touched down on a private airstrip near Lake Placid, the cold mountain air hit me like a slap in the face. Marcus handed me the keys to an unmarked SUV.

"Go alone, boss," Marcus said quietly. "If she sees a convoy of mobsters rolling up her driveway, she’ll vanish into the woods before you can even speak."

I nodded, taking the keys. I drove the winding mountain roads in absolute silence, the headlights cutting through the dense fog. Every mile brought me closer to the woman who held my heart, my empire, and my future in her hands.
