Chapter 1 - The Dark Whisper at the Banquet Table

The silence that fell over the Moretti banquet hall was heavier than the crystal chandelier hanging above us. Fifty of Chicago’s most elite guests sat frozen, their forks hovering inches from their plates, their eyes darting nervously between Luca Moretti, his pale fiancée Vanessa, and the visibly shaken Michael Moretti.
My heart hammered violently against my ribs. I was only twenty-five years old, working as a housemaid to help support my mother, yet I had accidentally stumbled into the middle of a lethal syndicate war.
“Emily,” Luca’s voice cut through the silence like a razor-sharp blade. It wasn't loud, but it commanded absolute terror. “Repeat what Mr. Vitale just said.”
Vanessa’s father, Richard Bellini, stood up slowly from his seat, his face losing all color. “Luca, let’s not act irrationally. This is a misunderstanding orchestrated by a common domestic who doesn't know her place.”
“Sit down, Richard,” Luca didn't even look at his future father-in-law. His dark, piercing gaze remained locked on me. “Emily. I want to hear it from you.”
I swallowed hard, tasting the metallic fear on my tongue. I knew the danger of speaking out against the Bellini family, but looking at Michael—who looked completely blindsided—and at Luca, who was standing on the precipice of a massive betrayal, I knew I couldn't stay silent.

“Mr. Moretti,” I began, my voice shaking before steadying itself with quiet resolve. “Mr. Vitale just stated that Mr. Bellini warned him earlier this evening... that if Michael didn't willingly sign over his shares of the restaurant and step away from the family business by tonight, he wouldn't live to see tomorrow morning.”
Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical gasp. “She’s lying! Luca, she’s a malicious little liar trying to ruin our wedding!”
