Chapter 12 - The Fall of the Traitors Inside the Inner Circle

With Vincent Colombo neutralized and the internal conspirators permanently exiled or imprisoned, the Chicago syndicate underwent a profound transformation. Luca restructured the council, stripping power from the old-guard capos who had supported the Bellini and Colombo factions and replacing them with loyal, honorable leaders dedicated to rebuilding the family's legitimate business enterprises.
Back at the Moretti mansion, the heavy cloud of fear and paranoia that had hung over the estate for months finally lifted.
It was a bright Saturday morning. The autumn air was crisp, and sunlight poured through the grand windows of the solarium where Teresa sat sipping her tea, looking healthier and more vibrant than she had in years.
I stood by the window, watching the gardeners tend to the newly replanted rose beds outside.
“You’re very quiet today, Emily,” Teresa noted gently, setting her porcelain teacup down on the saucer.
I turned around, smiling softly. “I was just thinking about how much everything has changed, Teresa. A few months ago, I was just a housemaid trying to pay my mother's medical bills, terrified of making a single mistake.”
“Brave, intelligent, and fiercely loyal,” Teresa corrected with a warm, knowing smile. “You saved my son, and you brought this family back from the dark.”
Before I could reply, the study doors opened, and Luca stepped inside. He had completely abandoned his formal black suits in favor of a comfortable charcoal sweater and dark slacks, looking more relaxed and handsome than I had ever seen him.
He walked directly over to me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin gently on my shoulder.
“What are the two most important women in my world discussing?” Luca murmured, pressing a soft kiss against my temple.
“We were discussing how much trouble you used to be before someone finally put you in your place,” Teresa teased playfully.

Luca laughed—a rich, genuine sound that warmed the entire room. He tightened his embrace around me, making my heart race as always. “She definitely put me in my place, Mom. In fact, I don't think I’ll ever recover.”
“Good,” I whispered, turning slightly in his arms to look up into his dark, affectionate eyes. “Because I don't plan on going anywhere.”
