Chapter 7 - Blood is Thicker Than Water, But Greed is Stronger

The elimination of Julian Vance effectively shattered the last remnants of the Bellini faction. Within forty-eight hours, Luca had completely dismantled Richard Bellini’s syndicate network, absorbing their assets and cementing his legacy not just as a feared mafia boss, but as an unstoppable protector of his family's honor.
Richard and Vanessa Bellini were permanently exiled from Chicago, stripped of their wealth, and sent away under heavy guard to a remote property overseas where they could never pose a threat again. The mansion slowly returned to a solarium of peace, though nothing between Luca and me could ever go back to being ordinary.
It was a crisp Sunday afternoon. The autumn sunlight streamed through the high glass windows of the grand solarium, where Michael was sitting comfortably, drinking coffee and laughing quietly with Teresa, the family matriarch. I sat across from them, reviewing corporate restructuring documents.
“You’re working too hard, Emily,” Michael noted with a warm smile, no longer the arrogant brother he once was.
“I’m just finishing up the final audit for the northern docks,” I replied, smiling back.
Before Michael could comment, the solarium doors opened, and Luca walked in. He had discarded his formal suit jacket, wearing a simple black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up. When he looked at me, a soft, tender expression crossed his face—one that he reserved exclusively for me.
“Emily,” Luca greeted softly, walking over to my chair. “Can I steal you for a moment? There’s something I want to show you in the courtyard.”
I nodded, standing up and following him out through the glass doors into the private enclosed garden where vibrant red and white roses were in full bloom.
The autumn breeze rustled through the trees as Luca stopped by the stone fountain, turning to face me. The usual hardened edge of the mafia boss was completely gone, replaced by a raw, vulnerable sincerity.
“Emily,” Luca began, his voice surprisingly hesitant. “When you stood up to Vanessa that night—when you risked your life to protect my brother and refused to let them intimidate you—you didn't just save my family. You woke something up inside me that I thought had died years ago.”
My heart hammered against my ribs. “Luca... you don't have to—”
“I do,” he interrupted gently, taking both of my hands in his warm, powerful palms. “For years, I believed that love and weakness were the same thing in our world. I thought I had to be made of stone to protect what was mine. But you showed me that true strength comes from intelligence, loyalty, and standing beside the person who holds your heart.”

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as I looked up at him. “I was just a housemaid trying to survive, Luca.”
“You were never just a housemaid,” he whispered, a tender smile gracing his lips. “You were the light that brought my family back from the dark. Stay with me, Emily. Not as an employee, not as a guest... but as my equal. As my partner in everything.”
