Chapter 6 - The Midnight Confession That Changed Everything

Days blurred into a whirlwind of quiet tactical restructuring. While Luca dismantled the Bellini shipping empire and reclaimed absolute control over the Chicago docks, the mansion remained a heavily guarded sanctuary.

It was late Friday night, nearly midnight, when I went down to the underground archives to secure the remaining digital backup drives. The corridors were dimly lit, casting long, eerie shadows against the stone walls.

As I turned the corner toward the vault, a shadow detached itself from the doorway.

I froze. “Who’s there?”

“Well, well, if it isn't the little translator,” a slick, venomous voice echoed.

It was Julian Vance, Richard Bellini’s chief legal counsel, who had managed to slip past the outer security perimeter during a shift change. He stepped forward, holding a silenced pistol aimed directly at my chest.

My blood ran cold. I reached instinctively into my pocket where Luca’s encrypted panic button lay hidden.

Julian saw the movement and laughed coldly, lunging forward with alarming speed. Before I could press the button, he grabbed my arm and pinned me against the stone wall, pressing the cold steel barrel against my collarbone.

“Drop the drive, sweetheart,” Julian hissed. “Or I’ll make sure you never translate another word again.”

“You won't get away with this,” I managed to choke out, fighting the panic rising in my chest. “Luca’s guards will be here any second.”

“Luca is busy dealing with the harbor police,” Julian smiled wickedly. “By the time he realizes what happened here, you’ll be just another tragic accident.”

Before Julian could pull the trigger, a heavy crash echoed from the end of the corridor.

The heavy iron vault doors were kicked open with earth-shattering force. There stood Luca, his black coat billowing behind him, holding his sidearm ready. His face was a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.

“Let her go, Julian,” Luca’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it echoed with lethal promise through the stone hall.

Julian’s hand trembled slightly as the pistol pressed closer to my skin. “Stay back, Luca! One step closer, and she dies!”

Luca didn't stop. He walked forward slowly, his dark eyes locked onto Julian with terrifying intensity. “You think taking a hostage saves you? You walked into a lion's den, Julian. And you just stepped on the wrong prey.”

“Drop your weapon!” Julian screamed, losing his nerve.

“Drop her,” Luca commanded, raising his pistol with terrifying precision.

Before Julian could react, a deafening crack echoed through the archives. Luca’s bullet struck Julian’s weapon hand with pinpoint accuracy, shattering his wrist and sending his pistol clattering onto the stone floor.

Julian screamed in agony, releasing his grip and collapsing to his knees.

I stumbled forward, but before I hit the floor, strong, muscular arms caught me, pulling me securely against a broad, familiar chest.

“Are you hurt?” Luca asked, his voice shaking slightly as his hands frantically checked me for injuries.

I looked up into his dark, worried eyes, feeling entirely safe. “I’m... I’m okay, Luca. Thank you.”

Luca pulled me tighter against him, burying his face briefly in my hair before signaling his guards to drag the traitor away. Then he looked back down at me with an expression that made my heart race faster than the gunshot ever could.
