Chapter 8 - The Ultimatum That Shook the Chicago Underworld

Word of the collapse of the Bellini syndicate spread through the Chicago underworld like wildfire. Rival families—specifically the ruthless Colombo syndicate—had spent years waiting for a moment of weakness to strike, believing that the internal turmoil between the Morettis and Bellinis would leave the empire vulnerable to a hostile takeover.
They miscalculated completely.
Three days after Luca’s confession in the garden, a formal ultimatum arrived at the mansion gates: a demand from Don Vincent Colombo, the aging patriarch of the city's eastern faction, calling for an emergency council meeting at an abandoned shipyard downtown, or face immediate territorial war.
I was in the private study reviewing financial statements when Luca slammed the heavy mahogany door shut, his face set in stone. He tossed a black leather envelope onto the desk.
“Colombo thinks he can smell blood in the water,” Luca said coldly, pacing across the room. “He wants to renegotiate our shipping routes and absorb our eastern docks while he thinks we’re still recovering from the Bellini betrayal.”
“Are you going to meet him?” I asked, stepping closer, feeling a knot of worry tighten in my stomach.
“I have to,” Luca replied, stopping to look down at me. His dark eyes softened as he placed a warm hand on my shoulder. “If I show any sign of hesitation, the other families will tear us apart. But I’m not walking into his trap blindly.”
“What is your plan?”
“I’m taking my inner circle, and I’m going to show Colombo exactly what happens when someone tests the Moretti name,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. Then, his expression softened further as he cupped my cheek with his palm. “And I want you to stay right here in the mansion. My personal security detail will ensure nobody gets within a mile of this estate.”
“I hate feeling like I’m hiding while you’re walking into danger,” I whispered honestly, leaning slightly into his warm touch.
“You aren't hiding, Emily. You are my anchor,” he murmured, his gaze dropping briefly to my lips before looking back into my eyes. “When I come back tonight, we are going to finish the conversation we started in the garden. Understand?”
I nodded, a shiver of anticipation running through me. “Be careful, Luca.”

That evening, the mansion grew deathly quiet as Luca and his capos departed for the downtown shipyard. I spent the hours pacing the length of the study, keeping close watch over the estate monitors.
Little did we know, Vincent Colombo wasn't just planning a territorial negotiation. He had laid a lethal trap designed to wipe out the Moretti leadership once and for all—and he had planted a final mole inside the estate to ensure that neither Luca nor anyone he loved ever saw the sunrise.
