Chapter 13 - Fire and Ashes: The Night of Retribution

Even though the syndicate wars had ended and peace had finally settled over Chicago, the ghosts of the past still demanded a final reckoning.
Late that evening, after Teresa had retired to her quarters, Luca asked me to accompany him down to the estate's secure lower archives. The room contained the historical ledgers, records, and illicit contracts dating back to the founding of the Moretti empire decades ago.
“Why are we down here?” I asked, holding a small lantern as Luca unlocked the heavy iron vault door.
“Because to build a clean future, we have to burn the corruption of the past,” Luca explained, pushing the vault door open to reveal shelves stacked with decades-old financial documents and records of past betrayals tied to the old regime.
He began pulling the boxes off the metal shelves, stacking them neatly in the center of the stone floor.
“You’re destroying all of it?” I asked, astonished.
“Every single piece of leverage that kept this family trapped in the shadows,” Luca confirmed, handing me a heavy metal container of lighter fluid. “My father built this empire with blood and compromise. I want to rebuild it with legitimacy, transparency, and honor. But that starts by erasing the poison that nearly destroyed us from within.”
I understood immediately. By burning the old records, Luca was severing the syndicate's ties to its violent past, transforming the Moretti name from a feared mafia dynasty into a respected, legitimate corporate empire.
“Let me help,” I said, taking the container from his hand.
Together, we poured the fluid over the towering stacks of old ledgers and dark contracts. Luca struck a long match, watching the flame dance against the dim light of the vault before tossing it onto the pile.
Flames erupted instantly, roaring up toward the high stone ceiling, illuminating the dark room in a brilliant golden glow. We stood side by side, watching the ashes of the old world drift upward into the ventilation shafts.

Luca reached out, intertwining his fingers firmly with mine. The heat of the fire warmed our skin, but it was nothing compared to the warmth of his grip.
“The past is gone, Emily,” he whispered softly over the crackling of the flames. “There’s nothing left behind us now except what we build together.”
