Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web of Lies and Deceit

The rain lashed against the massive glass windows of the Moretti mansion as dawn began to paint the Chicago sky in cold, gray hues. I spent the remainder of the night organizing financial documents and shipping manifests that Luca’s security team had recovered from Richard Bellini’s private briefcase.

Around 7:00 AM, a soft knock sounded at the study door, and Luca walked in carrying two cups of hot coffee. He looked as though he hadn't slept either, yet his posture remained unyielding, radiating lethal authority.

“How did Michael rest?” Luca asked, sitting down across from me at the mahogany desk.

“He finally fell asleep around dawn,” I replied, handing him a file folder. “And I found something interesting in these shipping logs, Luca. Look at the date stamps on the Bellini export manifests from three months ago.”

Luca leaned in closer, his shoulder brushing against mine as he examined the papers. His dark eyebrows knitted together. “These aren't standard commercial shipments. They’re unauthorized weapons transfers routed through our northern docks.”

“Exactly,” I nodded, pointing to a signature at the bottom of the page. “And the authorization signature isn't yours, nor is it Michael’s. It’s stamped with an internal administrative code that only someone with master access to the household network could use.”

Luca’s jaw tightened. “Vanessa.”

“She had access to your private study every day,” I continued quietly. “She was helping her father siphon our inventory and build an independent armory right under your nose, using Michael as the scapegoat if anything ever went wrong.”

Luca looked up from the documents, meeting my eyes. There was a fierce, burning respect in his dark gaze. “You have the mind of a master strategist, Emily. How is it that a brilliant woman like you was working as a housemaid?”

“My mother’s medical bills piled up after my father passed away,” I explained honestly, looking down at my hands. “I had to drop out of university. Cleaning houses was the only job that paid cash fast enough to keep the lights on.”

Luca reached across the desk, gently covering my hands with his warm, powerful palms. “You don't ever have to worry about bills again, Emily. Your mother’s medical care is fully covered by the Moretti foundation from this day forward. And as for you... I have a much better position in mind.”
