Chapter 11 - The betrayal in the Courtyard and the Bullet That Didn't Wait for Permission

The silence that followed Marcus Reed’s declaration was heavier than the smoke rising from the burning gates of the carriage house.

Across the wet cobblestones, Marcus held his suppressed pistol steady, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. His eyes—once trusted by Dante Moretti for over a decade—now gleamed with the cold, unyielding ambition of a man who believed he had calculated every possible variable.

“You always trusted Victor too much, Dante,” Marcus called out over the hiss of the dying flames. “You thought loyalty could be bought with loyalty. But loyalty is just a currency that depreciates when a stronger empire offers a better exchange rate.”

Victor didn’t flinch. Beneath his heavy boot, the captured mercenary groaned, but Victor’s gaze remained locked on Marcus across the courtyard.

“You miscalculated one thing, Marcus,” Dante said. His voice was terrifyingly low, carrying across the open space without a tremor of panic.

Marcus smiled thinly. “And what is that? Your legendary temper? Your army of street soldiers who are currently locked outside the primary gates?”

“No,” Dante stepped forward, his Beretta raised, the barrel catching the pale amber light of the security lamps. “You assumed I didn't check your ledger books before I checked the hospital files.”

Marcus’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second.

Before he could pull the trigger on his pistol, a sharp crack echoed from the shadows of the second-floor gallery. A bullet tore through the sleeve of Marcus’s jacket, spinning him sideways and knocking the weapon from his grip with a shower of metallic sparks.

It wasn't Victor.

From the upper window, holding a sniper rifle with effortless professional precision, stood Adrian Cole. The old adviser’s face was hard as flint.

“I may have hidden the child to protect her from the Russians, Marcus,” Adrian shouted down, his voice echoing off the brick walls, “but I never partnered with a rat who sold out the Moretti bloodline to the highest bidder.”

Marcus clutched his bleeding shoulder, stumbling backward against the stone pillar as Victor closed the distance in two swift strides, slamming him down onto the pavement with a force that knocked the wind from his lungs.
