Chapter 4 - The Midnight Visitor on the Fire Escape and the Warning Written in Italian

The rain started around two in the morning, drumming a heavy, rhythmic tattoo against the leaded glass windows of the Moretti estate.
Dante was standing by the window of his third-floor gallery, staring down into the rain-slicked courtyard, when the glass behind him clicked.
Not the front door. Not the service elevator.
The old iron fire escape that ran up the rear facade of the historic brownstone—a route known only to ghosts and old friends.
Dante didn’t reach for the Beretta resting in the desk drawer. Instead, he turned slowly, his shadow stretching long across the Persian rug as a dark figure stepped through the casement window.
It was Adrian.
He looked older tonight, his silver hair plastered to his forehead by the rain, his trench coat dripping dark pools onto the hardwood.
“You shouldn’t be here, Adrian,” Dante said, his voice flat. “If Victor sees you coming through the back, he’ll draw his weapon.”
“Let him,” Adrian wheezed, catching his breath. He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a damp, folded sheet of heavy linen stationery. “I didn't come from my apartment, Dante. I came from the archives at St. Jude’s.”
Dante’s eyes narrowed. “The hospital sealed those records in 2020.”
“They tried,” Adrian said, tossing the paper onto the desk. “Someone unsealed them yesterday afternoon. Look at the signature on the secondary release form.”
Dante stepped forward and unfolded the paper.
The ink was smudged by rain, but the signature was unmistakable. It was his own handwriting—or an exact, terrifying forgery down to the distinct slant of the trailing 'e'.
Beneath it was a handwritten note in Italian, written in the cramped, neat script of old Father Lorenzo, who had passed away five years ago:
*“La bambina è il pegno. Proteggila da chi l'ha venduta.”* (The child is the pledge. Protect her from the one who sold her.)
“Who else knows?” Dante asked, his voice dropping into that dark, quiet register that made even his capos tremble.
“Just us,” Adrian said. “And whoever left Elena Bennett in that ballroom tonight to test whether you still had a heart.”
