Chapter 6 - The Secret Room Behind the Library Where Dante Hides His Only Weakness

The black sedan didn't return to the main Moretti estate on Fifth Avenue. Instead, Dante ordered Victor to drive the vehicle through the heavy wrought-iron gates of the estate's old carriage house—a stone annex that had not been opened since Isabella’s death.
Inside, the air was cool and smelled of polished mahogany and old leather.
Elena clutched Isla tightly as Dante opened the heavy oak door leading into a private apartment that had been untouched for six years. It wasn't a prison cell; it was a sanctuary. A nursery with pale yellow walls, half-assembled cribs, and a rocking chair that still looked as though someone had just stepped out of it.
“You’re staying here,” Dante said, his voice flat, leaving no room for argument. “Nobody enters this building without my direct authorization. Victor has the perimeter secured with men who answer only to me.”
Elena looked around the room, her eyes lingering on the tiny rocking horse in the corner. A shadow of profound sorrow crossed her features. “You think keeping us locked in a ghost room will protect us from what’s coming? Dante... you don’t know who you’ve made an enemy of inside your own council.”
“I know every traitor who breathes in New York,” Dante replied coldly, stepping closer. “And I know that someone wanted you and this little girl to walk across that ballroom last night. Why?”
Isla, suddenly brave despite the grim atmosphere, slipped out from beneath the wool blanket and wandered over to a low bookshelf. She reached up and pulled down a leather-bound volume of fairy tales, its pages yellowed with age.
“Mommy said we had to find the man with the sad eyes,” Isla murmured, looking up at Dante without a shred of fear. “She said he’s the only one who can fix the broken music box.”
Dante’s breath caught in his throat.
The music box.
An antique ballerina box that Isabella had wound every night before she went into labor—a box that had vanished from the master bedroom the very night the hospital reported her death.
