Chapter 9 - The Siege at the Carriage House and the Gunfire That Shattered the Manhattan Night

The warning didn't come from Victor’s radios. It came from the shattered glass of the carriage house’s upper-level window.

A heavy suppression-fire burst tore through the leaded panes, chewing up the antique wallpaper as plaster rained down over the nursery.

“Down!” Dante roared, spinning on his heel and drawing his Beretta in a single fluid motion.

Across the courtyard, dark figures in tactical gear were scaling the wrought-iron gates, silhouetted against the amber streetlights of Manhattan. The Solovov syndicate had made their move. They hadn't come to negotiate; they had come to wipe out the Moretti bloodline once and for all.

Elena pulled Isla under the heavy oak dining table, shielding the little girl with her own body as bullets slammed into the exterior brickwork.

“Victor! Status!” Dante shouted into his lapel communicator as he fired two precise shots through the broken window, dropping a mercenary off the balcony.

“Boss! They hit the front gates with a truck! There’s twenty of them, heavily armed!” Victor’s voice barked over the static, punctuated by the deafening crack of shotgun fire. “They knew the security codes! Someone on the inside gave them the layout!”

Dante’s eyes narrowed with deadly clarity. Adrian hadn’t just hidden the child; he had compromised the estate’s security protocols to force a confrontation.

“Hold the courtyard!” Dante ordered, grabbing an assault rifle from the secret arms cache behind the library bookcase. He looked down at Elena and Isla, crouching beneath the table. “Stay here. Do not move.”

“Dante!” Elena cried out, her eyes wide with terror. “They won’t stop until she’s dead!”

“They’ll have to get through every inch of me first,” Dante said, his voice steady as granite.
