Chapter 14 - The Music Box Found Beneath the Floorboards and the Promise of Tomorrow

Later that evening, after the guests had departed and the grand halls had grown quiet, Dante and Elena stood together in the master bedroom on the top floor of the Fifth Avenue townhouse.

The room had been completely renovated, purged of the cold, sterile shadows of the past.

Dante knelt beside an old floorboard near the hearth—a loose panel that Adrian had pointed out earlier that evening. Using a small brass tool, Dante lifted the cedar plank to reveal a hidden compartment that had remained sealed since the winter of 2020.

Inside rested a single velvet-lined box.

An antique silver music box with a tiny porcelain ballerina spinning upon its lid.

Elena gasped softly, covering her mouth with her hands. “I thought... I thought they destroyed it when they cleared the nursery.”

Dante lifted the box carefully, brushing away a light layer of dust. He set it on the mahogany table and turned the winding key at its base three gentle times.

The delicate, timeless notes of a classical lullaby filled the quiet room, clear and sweet, echoing off the high ceilings.

On top of the box, the tiny porcelain ballerina began to spin gracefully in circles, just as she had six years ago.

Isla, who had wandered into the room clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit, stopped in her tracks. Her eyes widened with wonder as she listened to the music.

“It’s working,” Isla whispered, looking up at Dante with pure delight. “The music box isn’t broken anymore.”

Dante looked down at his daughter, then across the room at Elena. For the first time in his life, the heavy crown of the Moretti empire felt light, replaced by the simple, beautiful warmth of a family restored.

“No, sweetheart,” Dante said, pulling both of them close into his arms. “It’s finally playing the right song.”
