Chapter 2 - The Face in the Catering Uniform That Made Adrian Cole Drop His Crystal Glass

Adrian Cole did not break things.

He was the man who kept columns standing when the roof caught fire. For thirty years, through two wars and three generations of New York underworld restructuring, Adrian had been the silent architect of Dante’s peace.

When the crystal champagne flute slipped from his fingers and shattered against the marble floor, the sharp crack was the loudest sound in the ballroom for five seconds.

“Adrian,” Dante murmured, his voice low and devoid of panic, though his eyes remained fixed on the little girl still standing by his knee.

“Excuse me, Dante,” Adrian said. His voice was steady, but the skin around his temples had gone gray. He was staring past the child, staring at the woman in the plain black catering dress who was now kneeling in front of Isla, whispering hurried apologies to the room at large.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Moretti,” the woman said, her voice shaking slightly as she scooped her daughter up into her arms. “She slipped away from the back staging area. She thought—she didn’t know—”

Dante raised a hand. The woman stopped talking instantly.

Her name tag read *Catered Elegance - Staff*. But her eyes didn't belong to a temporary catering employee. They belonged to someone who had spent a lifetime memorizing exits.

“What is your name?” Dante asked.

“Elena,” she whispered. “Elena Bennett.”

“Bennett,” Dante repeated. The name sat strangely on his tongue, like a key cut for a lock that had rusted shut twenty years ago. “You aren’t on the permanent roster for this venue.”

“No, sir. My agency was called in this afternoon to cover the auxiliary dessert bar.”

“An emergency substitution,” Dante noted. His gaze shifted to Marcus Reed across the room. Marcus gave a microscopic shake of his head. The agency hadn't been scheduled; they were last-minute replacements called by an anonymous donor.

A trap? Or coincidence?

In Dante Moretti’s world, coincidence was just a poorly planned conspiracy.
